PSS sorbents for removing trace hydrogen sulfide in methane

Limei ZHONG, Li ZHOU

Frontiers of Chemical Science and Engineering 2011, Volume 5, Issue 3,   Pages 339-342 doi: 10.1007/s11705-010-0569-7

Abstract: Sorbents of the pressure swing sorption process (PSS) to remove trace amount of H S (190 ppm) contained in methane were experimentally studied. The sorbents consist of adsorbent carrier (silica gel or activated carbon) and absorbent which spreads outside the carrier granules’ pores (triethanolamine, TEA or -methyl-2-pyrrolidone, NMP). The results of breakthrough and regeneration tests show that silica gel is more suitable to be the carrier than activated carbon and TEA is more suitable to be the absorbent than NMP. The loaded absorbent could enlarge the sorption capacity of H S considerably. And the BET tests indicate that the absorbent deposits on the surface of the carrier’s pores and can reduce the mesopores’ size and block the micropores.

Preparation, characterization of sludge adsorbent and investigations on its removal of hydrogen sulfide

Fen LI,Tao LEI,Yanping ZHANG,Jinzhi WEI,Ying YANG

Frontiers of Environmental Science & Engineering 2015, Volume 9, Issue 2,   Pages 190-196 doi: 10.1007/s11783-014-0628-2

Abstract: To recycle the sludge resource from sewage treatment plants and solve the problem of odor pollution, the sludge was converted into an adsorbent by carbonized pyrolysis and the process was optimized by orthogonal experiments. The capability for odor removal as well as the structure of the adsorbent was studied with H S as a target pollutant. The results indicate that the main factor affecting the deodorization performance of the adsorbent is the activating time. The sludge adsorbent sample SAC1 prepared under optimum conditions exhibits the best deodorization performance with a H S breakthrough time of 58 min and an iodine value nearly that of the coal activated carbon. The breakthrough time of H S is much longer than that on the coal activated carbon. On the other hand, characterization results from X-ray diffractometer (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectrometer (XPS) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) techniques show that SAC1 is composed of mainly graphite carbon with lower oxygen content on the surface. The bulk of SAC1 exhibits a honeycomb structure with well developed porosity and a high specific surface area of 120.47 m ·g , with the average pore diameter being about 5 nm. Such a structure is in favor of H S adsorption. Moreover, SAC1 is detected to contain various metal elements such as Zn, Fe, Mg, etc., leading to a superior deodorization property to that of coal activated carbon.

New nanostructured sorbents for desulfurization of natural gas

Lifeng WANG, Ralph T. YANG

Frontiers of Chemical Science and Engineering 2014, Volume 8, Issue 1,   Pages 8-19 doi: 10.1007/s11705-014-1411-4

Abstract: Desulfurization of natural gas is achieved commercially by absorption with liquid amine solutions. Adsorption technology could potentially replace the solvent extraction process, particularly for the emerging shale gas wells with production rates that are generally lower than that from the large conventional reservoirs, if a superior adsorbent (sorbent) is developed. In this review, we focus our discussion on three types of sorbents: metal-oxide based sorbents, Cu/Ag-based and other commercial sorbents, and amine-grafted silicas. The advantages and disadvantages of each type are analyzed. Possible approaches for future developments to further improve these sorbents are suggested, particularly for the most promising amine-grafted silicas.

N-Positive ion activated rapid addition and mitochondrial targeting ratiometric fluorescent probes for in vivo cell H2S imaging

Yan Shi, Fangjun Huo, Yongkang Yue, Caixia Yin

Frontiers of Chemical Science and Engineering 2022, Volume 16, Issue 1,   Pages 64-71 doi: 10.1007/s11705-021-2048-8

Abstract: Heterocyclic compound quinoline and its derivatives exist in natural compounds and have a broad spectrum of biological activity. They play an important role in the design of new structural entities for medical applications. Similarly, indoles and their derivatives are found widely in nature. Amino acids, alkaloids and auxin are all derivatives of indoles, as are dyes, and their condensation with aldehydes makes it easy to construct reaction sites for nucleophilic addition agents. In this work, we combine these two groups organically to construct a rapid response site (within 30 s) for H S, and at the same time, a ratiometric fluorescence response is presented throughout the process of H S detection. As such, the lower detection limit can reach 55.7 nmol/L for H S. In addition, cell imaging shows that this probe can be used for the mitochondrial targeted detection of endogenous and exogenous H S. Finally, this probe application was verified by imaging H S in nude mice.
